pratt & Whitney

Problem Statement:

Maintenance Repair & Overhaul (MRO) facilities face unpredictable order volumes, causing labor and equipment inefficiencies that can affect delivery and financial performance. These fluctuations are currently addressed reactively. The aim is to enable real-time resource management to improve Overall Labor Effectiveness (OLE), Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), and meet customer expectations.

  • Purpose: Engage suppliers and MRO shops in providing feedback and exploring creative ideas regarding this industry-wide challenge

  • Expected Outcomes:

    • Feedback
    • Ideas
    • Sharing of best practices
    • New connections

MOELLER Aerospace

Problem Statement:

At Moeller Aerospace, consumable tooling is included in our overhead rate, simplifying cost allocation but limiting visibility into actual tooling costs at the part level, especially for complex geometries or exotic materials with higher tool rates.

  • Purpose: Engage companies in discussions surrounding best practices for allocation of consumable tooling, discuss pros and cons of allocating consumables into the overhead rate vs. the Bill of Material (BOM), and discuss strategies to effectively transition to allocation of these costs into the BOM.

  • Expected Outcomes:

    • Feedback on BOM vs. Overhead
    • Improved visibility for tooling
    • New connections
    • Potential for follow-up on recommendation

Eaton

 Problem Statement:

Customers increasingly expect proposal turnarounds within 4 weeks, but supplier quotes—critical for pricing—take 6–8 weeks. As a result, Eaton must choose between delivering late proposals or using conservative estimates based on similar parts.

  • Purpose: Identify best-in-industry practices for estimating costs of complex aerospace components with limited product definition on a tight timeline.
  • Expected Outcomes:
    • Evaluation of part complexity and risk vs. cost
    • Evaluation of industry estimating tools for complex components
    • Best-in-industry practices for providing fast, competitive quotes

“The AIAM roundtable in 2023 proved to be a success for Pratt & Whitney in helping to solve our automation integration challenges.  It allowed for us to gain contacts in the industry such as JR Automation, Siemens and other automation professionals across Michigan to come up with creative solutions to our automation challenges across our organization by brainstorming these solutions during the roundtable and then bring them onsite to see our challenges firsthand.”
